Sheetrock and ceilings

Chapter 01

Why do patches, nail pops and seams show through a new ceiling coat?

Most people notice it on a bright afternoon, when sun rakes across the ceiling and every old repair suddenly has an outline. A square that dries a slightly different shade from the paint around it is called flashing. It happens when a patch got painted with no primer under it, because bare joint compound soaks up paint differently from the paper face of the sheetrock around it.

Nail pops are the other regular offender. A fastener backs out as the house settles, and a small round bump pushes up through the paint. Add the faint ridge where two sheets were taped years ago and a ceiling in a Bonaire ranch house can read like a map in the wrong light. Painting over those only gets you the same map in a fresh colour.

A brown ring from an old roof leak is a third case. Ordinary wall paint will not hold it back, and the stain returns through the new coat within weeks unless it is sealed first. Tell Earnest about any ring you can see, even a faded one, so it gets handled before the roller comes out.

Patching, priming and rolling a ceiling, in the order it gets done

Furniture gets pushed to the middle of the room and covered, the floor gets drop cloths, and light fixtures and vents get masked. Then the ceiling is checked with a work light held low and flat against it, because that angle shows every flaw that daylight will show you later.

Loose tape is cut out and re-set, nail pops are pulled and driven back below the surface, and every dimple gets a skim of joint compound. Once it dries it is sanded and feathered at the edges until a hand cannot feel where the repair starts. Water rings and bare compound get a stain-blocking primer. New sheetrock gets a coat of drywall primer, so the finish coats take evenly instead of soaking in patch by patch.

The ceiling line is cut in with a brush first, in a strip a few inches wide, and the open area is rolled right behind it with a long-nap roller while that strip is still wet. Keeping a wet edge is what prevents lap marks and roller stripes. Two coats of flat ceiling paint go on, because flat hides the small waves that gloss would light up.

Chapter 03

When does a ceiling need painting again?

A ceiling that looks even when light rakes across it is still doing its job, whatever its age.

Yellowing above the stove, grey shadows around a vent or ceiling fan, and hairline cracks that follow the old seams are the usual signs a repaint is due. A fresh stain that spreads, or a ceiling that sags, is something else: that is a leak, not a paint problem, and it needs a roofer or a plumber before anyone paints.

Between coats, a dry duster does more than any spray cleaner will. Keep a small labelled jar of the exact ceiling paint and dab at a scuff or a sealed spot with a brush instead of dragging a long stroke, which flashes. For homes in Warner Robins and Bonaire, a call to (478) 420-1979 gets a walkthrough, and Earnest prices the job before he starts any work.
